The establishment of the Sultanate of Kaludan (Deep Seas) of Maguindanao

The primordial title of “Datu sa Kaludan sa Maguindanao” was first conferred to Datu Usi, the son of Datu Talumpa (Datu sa Maguindanao 1889-1896), brother of Datu Karaing (who succeeded and inherited the title of Datu sa Maguindanao and the great-grandson of Sultan Mohammad Anwaruddin Kawasa (17th Sultan of Maguindanao 1805-1830). This is a major hereditary title associated with the Sultanate of Maguindanao that ruled major parts of the island of Mindanao.

During the Spanish colonial period, the Sultanate of Maguindanao was able to defend its territory, preventing the Spaniards from colonizing the entire coastal Mindanao. The sultanate expanded throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, reaching its summit of strength and influence under Sultan Kudarat (reigned c. 1619–71). (2)
